2012 Family Reunion in the New Orleans
We toured the city in temperatures around 104 degrees every day. The fireworks display on July 4th from dueling barges' on the Mississippi River was spectacular. I took the Katrina tour and saw the height of the flood waters and rebuilt houses situated on concrete blocks. We walked down Bourbon Street on a Friday night (YIKES!). Is this the southern version of Sin City? I'm not used to nude men and women flaunting their stuff in public. We dined at Olivia's, Drago's Seafood Restaurant, Mother's Restaurant, Domenica's fine dining (awesome), Dooky Chase (President Obama beat me there), The Court of Two Sisters (awww nice!), etc. I walked through Harrah's praying that the one-armed bandits would go haywire and give people lots of money.:) I didn't stick around to see if my prayer was answered. We held a delightful family gathering at the Courtyard Marriott, rode the St. Charles streetcar to the end, ate breakfast on the terrace of our Club La Pension hotel on Decatur Street. I preached a Sunday morning message down by the riverside at RiverWalk. Perspiration rolled down my back and settled you know where. :) We took a cooking class to learn how to make shrimp gumbo and jambalaya. We then rode the ferry to the Algiers Island. We relaxed in Armstrong park where Louis Armstrong's statue is life-like. I imagined the incredible job the same sculptor would have done with Dr. Martin Luther King's Memorial in DC. I ate enough catfish to last me for a few years. My first redfish was delectable. I toured a creepy cemetery crowded with stone houses for the dead built above ground. We toured the World War II museum where we saw the movie Beyond All Boundaries and posed for pictures in front of military tanks while listening to the New Orleans Jazz Band. We spent a whole day at the Audubon Zoo where I saw white alligators and other amazing animals and great poetry posted all over the grounds. This zoo is really an animal park. The gorilla peeled an orange and ate it just like a human. Papa gorilla ate baby's leftovers and the baby ate papa's. They reminded me of Jack Sprat who ate no fat and his wife who ate no lean, and so betwix the two of them, they licked the platter clean. These huge beasts are vegetarians like many other animals. I wonder what that says to us humans.
